Roles and permissions

Every recipient of a shared label has a role that controls what they can do. You pick the role in the Share dialog when you add a recipient, and you can change it later.

The four roles

  • View — the recipient gets a read-only copy of the contacts in their address book. If they edit their local copy, the owner’s version wins on the next sync and the changes are overwritten.
  • Edit — the recipient’s changes sync back to the owner. They can also add new contacts to their “(Shared)” group or category, and those contacts flow into the owner’s label.
  • Can reshare — everything Edit can do, plus the ability to share the label onward to other people.
  • Owner — full control: manage recipients and roles, unshare, and transfer ownership. When ownership is transferred, the previous owner keeps the label with the Edit role.

Warning: deletions with the Edit role

With Edit (or Can reshare), deleting a contact from your “(Shared)” group is not just local — it removes the contact from the owner’s label for everyone. If you only want the contact out of your own address book, ask the owner to change your role to View, or ask them to unshare the label with you instead.

If a contact is deleted by mistake, the owner can bring it back: Rolyio keeps a snapshot of every deleted contact for 30 days. See Trash and restore.

Auditability

Every sharing and editing action is recorded in the Audit log, so owners can always see who changed or deleted what, and when.
